Culling is a critical step in a photographer’s post-production workflow that involves reviewing and selecting the best photos from a shoot before editing them. It used to eat a day. AI culling has made it quicker and a good deal more accurate. AI-powered culling software brings numerous benefits:
Efficiency: Rapidly sift through large volumes of photos, reducing the time spent on manual selection.
Accuracy: Automatically detect and discard subpar images based on focus, exposure, and composition.
Personalization: The best photo culling software adapts to individual preferences, offering a personalized culling experience that lets the photographer stay in control.
Integration: Fits the tools you already use, from culling through to editing.
Imagen's latest innovation, the Culling Studio, stands at the forefront of this technological evolution. Building on general AI advancements, the Culling Studio integrates directly into photographers' workflows, offering a suite of tools that is innovative and intuitive. Here are its standout features:
Cull Edited Previews: A feature unique to Imagen lets photographers apply their AI Profile of choice to preview their images as if they were already edited. By doing so, the photographer is able to experience an optimized view of what the final gallery will look like. This innovation also allows to make any necessary adjustments to the AI Profile and ensure satisfaction before the editing stage.
Advanced Sorting: Utilizes AI to accelerate the sorting process by categorizing images by quality and relevance, marking duplicates and emphasizing potential client favourites.
Familiar habits: Keyboard shortcuts are exactly the same as in Lightroom Classic, so it’s intuitive for anyone who is used to Lightroom.
One Workflow: Once you’re satisfied with your review, continue straight to Imagen’s AI Editing without ever leaving the app for a smooth and efficient transition to the next step in your workflow.
Smooth Integration: Works fluidly with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (including Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, Photoshop and Bridge (with Adobe Camera RAW).
This bespoke approach not only speeds up the culling process but ensures that each photo selected tells a part of the client's story in the most compelling way.
Expert Tips for Efficient Culling: Scott's Method
Scott Wyden Kivowitz, Imagen’s beloved Community Manager and a passionate surprise proposal and family photographer, shares his expert manual and AI-assisted culling processes:
The Manual Approach
Initial Review: Quickly mark out any immediate rejects using Imagen’s AI suggestions to focus only on potential keepers.
Rating System: Classify the remaining images using a star system:
⭐: Consider for the digital gallery.
⭐⭐⭐: Queue for definite editing.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: Designate as client picks.
Client Interaction: Allow clients to select their favourites from a proofing gallery. Upgrade their choices to 5 stars, prioritizing them for detailed editing.
Final Steps: With culling complete, smoothly transition to editing within Imagen, applying detailed adjustments as per the pre-applied AI Profile.
Stepping it up with Imagen Culling Studio
With Imagen’s Culling Studio, Scott has a far simpler approach to culling.
Personal Preferences: He configures Imagen to apply the star system:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: Keepers
⭐⭐⭐⭐: Standalones
⭐⭐⭐Duplicates
Optimized Previews: Apply your favourite AI Profile (Scott’s personal editing style is called Those Greens) to get the full picture (pun intended) of how the story will be told when the gallery is presented to clients.
Reviewing: Only look at the 4 and 5 stars to confirm result satisfaction. If needed, look at alternative Keepers within the Duplicates.
By integrating Imagen's AI-driven insights with a structured, manual review, photographers can ensure they maintain full control so that only the best images make it to the editing table.
