Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help detect spam.

An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public next to your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the website can download and extract location data from images posted online.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may choose to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so you don’t need to fill in your details again when leaving another comment. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to check if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser.

When you log in, we use cookies to save your login information and display preferences. Login cookies last two days, screen options cookies last one year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login persists for two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be stored in your browser. It includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. We may also share limited data (name, email address, ticket information) with our event partners and service providers when it’s required to deliver the event experience, such as ticketing systems, payment processors, or communication tools. We never sell or rent your personal data to third parties.

Ticket Policy

Tickets for Way Up North events and workshops are non-refundable but fully transferable. Can’t make it? You’re welcome to sell or gift your ticket to someone else. Just email us their full name and contact details before the event so we can update our guest list.

Tickets cannot be transferred between events or used as credit toward future events. We do not issue refunds for changes in personal circumstances, travel issues, or missed attendance. Please ensure you’re able to attend before purchasing your ticket.

How long we retain your data

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely to allow automatic approval of future comments instead of holding them for moderation.

For registered users, we store the personal information provided in their profile. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (username changes are not permitted). Website administrators can also view and edit this information as needed.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you’ve provided. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you, except for data required for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Certain data may be processed outside the EU by trusted third-party services that comply with GDPR standards (e.g., email providers, ticketing systems, and analytics tools).
